This includes two different types of situation. First, there is the example of local mothers, fathers and children meeting and using their common minority language. In some mothers and toddlers' groups for example, the language of playing and conversation will be the minority language only. In a second situation, bilingual parents with bilingual children of different combinations of languages may meet to exchange ideas, hunt out answers to problems, swap information and literature, and importantly, encourage each other.

When new and different people enter the family situation, how can this be used to raise the profit of languages? In raising children, there are constant mountains and valleys, periods of pleasure and occasions of worry and pain. There are times in a child's physical development when there is the glory of crawling, walking, running, winning races, learning to swim. There are also periods of illness, pain and discomfort. In social development, there is the joy of new friendships, of warm relationships with close friends and meeting new and exciting people.

Gentle inquiries about the child's second language development may indicate to the child that the parent is positively interested. Praising the child when they hear the child speaking the second language may do wonders for the child's language ego. Visiting the nursery school or childminder and showing interest in the language development of the child in that context may both encourage the teacher or carer. It will also signal to the child the parents' interest and awareness. There is a danger in allowing interest to become concern, and enthusiasm to boil over into anxiety.
